Pró-Saber SP Institute is a non-profit civil society organization that works in the community of Paraisópolis, in São Paulo. The institute’s mission is to strengthen the integral education of Brazilian children through reading and playing experiences, transforming their families and communities.

Created in 2003, Pró-Saber SP derived from the experience of Rio de Janeiro headquarters – Pró-Saber RJ – founded in 1987, whose mission is to find, work and disseminate theoretical and practical alternatives to respond to Brazilian educational challenges.

The organization was created with the aim of filling the gap in the provision of early childhood education in Paraisópolis. At that time, children stayed at home until they were 7 years old, waiting for the minimum age to enter school, while children from middle and upper classes attended early childhood education in private schools. So, they entered Elementary School reading and writing, many of them were practically literate.

One of its propositional axes is reading beyond simply decoding, that is, for the interpretation of the world. The second point is playing as a teaching and sociability tool. And, finally, encouraging young people to play a leading role as a form of social transformation.
